Traffic Safety Improvements on Beacon Street (601183)
This project involved improvements to the Beacon Street corridor in Brookline from Ayr Street to St. Mary’s Street. The project site is within a historic district, originally designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and listed on the National and State Registers of Historic Places. The project was completed ahead of schedule, even with the numerous challenges posed by the high volume and varied uses of the roadway including automobiles, bicycles, pedestrians and MBTA light rail cars. The roadway improvements included road reconstruction, street and pedestrian lighting and signage upgrades, traffic signal improvements, pavement markings, sidewalk rehabilitations, drainage improvements, installation of wheelchair ramps and site furnishings, urban design elements, landscaping and rehabilitation of historic structures. Coordination with the MBTA was required throughout the project’s duration to complete work within and/or adjacent to the MBTA’s Green Line Right of Way. Staging of the work was arranged such that vehicular traffic and pedestrian traffic, bicycle accommodations and public transportation were maintained while minimizing any inconvenience to the public. The project was selected by Roads & Bridges Magazine as one of its Top 10 Roads for 2007. |
