Blue Hills Covered Storage Design-Build Project
Barletta’s first Design-Build project is currently underway in Quincy’s Blue Hills Reservation. Being built for the MWRA, the Blue Hills Covered Storage Facility is designed to replace the former Blue Hills Reservoir with secure, underground storage for 20 million gallons of water. The twin cylindrical concrete tanks, each 240 feet in diameter with 32 foot high walls, were constructed using both reinforced cast-in-place concrete and precast, prestressed concrete components. Importation of 100,000 cubic yards of earthen fill is required to be placed around the concrete tanks in coordination with the installation of the new water lines and valve chambers, which necessitated a compaction testing sub-component to the comprehensive QA/QC Program. Movement of trucks delivering approximately 4,000 loads of fill through the Reservation’s roadway system is being carefully choreographed according to schedules prepared in conjunction with the Department of Conservation and Recreation. The project is also restoring the site’s original woodland, meadow and wetland ecosystems alongside a new eight acre pond, which is being created behind a new concrete core wall dam. The new cast-in-place concrete core wall was connected to the existing dam’s core wall and seated on bed rock. The bed rock was pressure grouted and the new wall will be backfilled with clay to prevent exfiltration from the pond. A small parking area and walking trails will provide public access to the landscape and new wildlife habitat. Wetland permitting required detailed coordination with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Permitting, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the Quincy Conservation Commission. The presence of endangered snake species required Barletta’s Team to work closely with the Massachusetts Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program to design and implement a Species Protection Plan and worker training program. |
