South Boston Maritime Park Boston, Massachusetts

The South Boston Maritime Park is approximately 1.3 acres in size, and was designed to supply additional public green space along the waterfront.

The park provides a location for special and seasonal events, as well as the day-to-day needs of South Boston’s residents and those working in or visiting the areas attractions such as the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, the World Trade Center, and the Fleet Pavilion.

The programming and design of the park is focused on a maritime theme that celebrates both the heritage and contemporary activities of the Port of Boston.

Some of the park’s features:

• A large lawn with canopy trees overlooking Boston Harbor, extensive tree and perennial plantings, paved pathways and sidewalks, plentiful bench seating and two shade structures (pergolas)
• A café with outdoor tables and chairs, two public restrooms and a water fountain
• Extensive public art and interpretative elements including granite sculptures,
  mist fountains, tidal lights and nautical information
• Fully accessible design with on street metered parking spaces

The park has won a number of awards including an Honor Award from the Boston Society of Landscape Architects (BSLA), an Honor Award from the Boston Society of Architects (BSA), and the Project of the Year Award (under $10m category) from the Boston Chapter of the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA).

Barletta received the Massachusetts Port Authority’s General Construction Contractor of the Year Award for 2004 for this project, which states: “their excellent construction work exemplified their high quality, in budget, on schedule and safe work, while minimizing disruption to the traveling public and MassPort tenants.”
