Route 1A/Neptune Road
CA/T Contract C08A8
Route 1A / Neptune Road was a Central Artery / Tunnel Project (CA/T) contract that consisted of modifications to the existing highway viaduct foundations and abutments, and altering and widening the existing viaduct structures. Demolition and reconstruction of the mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) and reinforced concrete highway structures was included. The existing highway viaducts were steel structures carrying Route 1A Northbound and Southbound over Neptune Road and the Bremen Street Park in East Boston near Logan International Airport. The work also included traffic signalization, site improvements including sidewalks and crosswalks, signage and pavement markings, utility and drainage improvements, roadway lighting, removal of contaminated material and the design, implantation and maintenance of traffic detours. During the course of the project, deficiencies were noted in the existing bridge. The existing deck was tested by sounding and deteriorated and loose concrete surfacing was removed from the viaduct spans and replaced with new concrete paving. Additional structural repairs to the existing bridge were also required. The closely coordinated effort between Barletta, the Central Artery, SDC and MassPort allowed for the efficient redesign of the Neptune Road / Bennington intersection, with the most minimal impact to the project possible. All work was completed while maintaining the roadway open to traffic. |
